Highlands Scrub Natural Area, Pompano Beach, FL [Dec. 22nd, 2007|09:55 pm]

Two months ago, a new park opened in my county - the Highlands Scrub Natural Area. It's one of several scrub areas that have recently been marked for conservation. Scrub areas are one of Florida's most endangered habitats and sadly, a habitat that's home to a high number of endemic species (therefore they are endangered as well).

Scrub habitat is extremely dry, comparable to a desert environment and sharing some of the same plant species. Cacti and other succulents are common.

But saw palmetto, paw-paw, and sand pine dominate this particular area.

From a distance, it doesn't look particularly attractive. For example, this sandy clearing (where gopher tortoises likely feed, but I didn't happen to see any today).

But when you look up close, there is a fascinating variety of flowers and plants.

And a lot of interesting mosses and lichens.

And of course, the typical Florida insect life. (Though this one kindly let me get closer than most!)

I stayed until sunset...

and got home by the light of the moon.

See, I love scrub-brush in a natural setting. It looks sad when it's the only thing you see surrounded by buildings (because then it just looks like we've killed off everything else), but on it's own, it just looks... tough. In a good-tough way. Like if they were people, they'd be the people you'd want on your side if disaster struck.

That shot of the moon is so cool.

That's how I feel about scrub-bush communities! :-)

You can find the beauty there, ya just have to look (like Kate did!)... it's like those tough people you think are bristly but when you get to know them, they are beautiful :-)
