This is the Sawgrass Recreation Park on Highway 27 in Fort Lauderdale. This morning, listeners of the Paul & Young Ron show on BIG 105.9 were treated to free admission, including airboat rides and the exhibits. However, Florida residents should note that with one day's paid admission, you get the entire year for free.

This was taken from a moving airboat, so it's not as crisp as I would like. But I think it's an excellent illustration of why the Everglades are also called The River of Grass.

It was a bit cloudy this morning, making the vultures in the bare trees look rather ominous.

After a bit, but sun began to come out - seen here behind lots of sawgrass!

A very large soft-shell turtle came right up to the boat.

When we docked, we went to see their exhibits, where the kids held a baby alligator, and we saw its momma and huge 12-foot daddy. Unfortunately, those pics didn't come out well. But we got to pet a variety of other reptiles.

This gentleman was kind enough to bring out the red-tail boa constrictor for us to pet.

Another nice young man allowed us to pet the blue-tongued skink, which had just shed and was super-smooth.

And also he let us touch the bearded lizard. (That sounds... ummm... wrong.)

We didn't get to pet the Florida panther, of course, but it got plenty of attention from our guide.

The exhibits were on a little strip of land with beautiful swamp all around.

The whole trip only took about two hours (minus the 45 minute travel time each way from east-central Broward), so it's a nice attraction to see that doesn't take a great deal of planning or time. We also learned a good deal about the 'Glades, the Seminoles, and the animals we saw. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend it!

Thank you! They don't even begin to do it justice. The swamp (contrary to connotation) is one of the prettiest places I've ever been.
